HEELING ERROR

When a yacht is heeled, the relative position of her compass and the ironmongery that is deviating it may change enough to affect its reading. This is known as heeling error. I have never been on board a yacht, large or small, cheap or expensive, that boasted a table for this. Indeed, to contemplate arranging for one would be totally unrealistic. This does not mean that heeling error will go away. The best way to deal with it is to check it on passage against the handbearing compass.

When you are on a long leg where the compass counts, ask your mate to take the handbearing compass to the site you used for compass swinging and check the yacht’s heading. Any difference between the two compasses that is not anticipated from the deviation card is the heeling error. You’ll have to hope that the handbearing compass is not being affected by this as well as the steering compass, but that is a fairly safe assumption. The error won’t amount to more than a degree or two at most in all normal circumstances.
